Progress is a process, and mastering a skill requires time and deliberate practice. Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers suggests it takes 10,000 hours to achieve mastery, supported by a study (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Romer, 1993) that highlights the importance of prolonged effort and deliberate practice. However, a recent study (Hambrick et al., 2014) found that deliberate practice accounts for only one-third of performance variance, suggesting other factors like cognitive ability also play a role. Ericsson (2014) argues that expertise still requires extensive practice.
Balancing practice with life's demands (job, family, health) can be challenging, and progress depends on individual priorities and learning styles. Here are practical steps to enhance practice:
Map Out Your Schedule: Dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to practice, rewarding yourself afterward.
Set Realistic Weekly Goals: Rate your performance from 1-10, aiming for an 8. Seek help if needed.
Listen to Other Musicians: Learn from experts by observing their techniques and expressions.
Find a Third Party for Feedback: Get feedback from others on clarity, dynamics, and showmanship.
Make Time to REST: Balance practice with rest, including stretches, breathing, and self-care.
